Southern Sky

Description: Went on a night sky shooting session tonight. This one turned out pretty well I think. This is the Milky Way with the Southern Cross next to the tree (if you know where to look). It was a lovely clear but cold night. The glow on the horizon is light pollution from Brisbane about 40k away. I did some light painting on the tree with a torch in another shot, but I exposed too long and the stars moved too much. I'll have to put that one down to experience I thin and try again next time.

Tiny Beasts

Description: I ventured out into the back yard with my macro lens shortly after a rain shower to see what tiny beasts were about. I think this is a St Andrew's Cross Spider. This was a tripod shot, using a handheld, off camera flash diffused with a sheet of white A4 paper.

Sunny Day in Sydney Photoshopped

Description: Disappointed with my first edit of this, I've gone to town with Photoshop on the image. In the end I did manage to remove the sun and get the sky looking natural again, fixed the perspective on the bridge (and cheated a bit making it a little bigger) and while I was at it, decided to get rid of the curving walkway that bothered me in the bottom right. So this is really isn't a photo any more, it's a three image HDR stack, heavily edited. Kev won't be able to sleep for a week after this.

Sunny Day in Sydney

Description: On a recent trip to Sydney I snuck out at lunchtime for a couple of touristy grab shots. The light was awful as it was completely the wrong time of day, the light was far too bright and flat. The best I could get was this shot across the harbour which I've tried to rescue as best I could with HDR. This was a a three shot handheld grab in very windy condtions, so everything was conspiring against me. I think it turned out okay though given the circumstances.

Description: Macro shot of a small jumping spider sitting on a leaf on a bush in my backyard. I completely stuffed up this shot, way overexposed, wrong ISO but managed to recover the details in ACR. I cleaned up a lot of the noise in post-processing and the end image doesn't look too bad, but it really makes me want to try this again thinking the process through to get the right setup, using a tripod and cable release and some kind of snoot setup to direct and diffuse the speedlight output. I need to be careful with this though, as I can see these tiny beast shots getting kind of addictive.

Description: I followed the progress of this jumping spider for a while to see if he came across something to eat. He thought for a while and decided against trying to tackle the bigger spider before he left to look for something more suitable for dinner. Handheld, High ISO large aperture shot, hence the noise. Next time I venture out into the backyard I'm taking my tripod, 'cause I was pleasantly surprised at how many tiny beasts there were to photograph.

Description: Handheld semimacro shot in my backyard. It was a really dull overcast day, and I couldn't get the shutterspeed quick enough handheld with a smaller apperture, hence the wide-open apperture, high ISO and very small DoF. It doesn't look quite as noisy in the larger size. Any C&C more than welcome.

Description: Just heard back from the good folk at http://www.photoartgallery.com and they've selected this picture I took of an old Holden (an Australian motoring icon) at a car show on Australia Day this year, and they're going to include it in a photo book they're going to publish. It's one of 30 images they've selected for a book about how people celebrated Australia Day and what it means to them. As you can imagine I'm pretty happy about that. :-) The photo is a wide angle, three shot HDR +/- 3 EV, post processed in Photoshop.

Description: Just playing around with the concept of hollowed out fruit/veg and a speedlight. Took one each of these capsicum today and merged them together. I failed with a big red chillipepper (the fruit works best if it's spherical) and an orange skin was a bit too thick to illuminate correctly and evenly.

Description: Need some feedback on this as an idea for an entry in a photo competition in work. The theme is "Light," so I thought I'd hollow out an apple and stick a remote speedlight in there, spray some water droplets on and see how it looked. Not much post process work done on it, as it turned out (I think) pretty good.

Description: This was one of my son's Xmas presents, which took (both of us) quite a while to put together. The purpose of the shot is to try to learn a bit more about indoor lighting and "studio" type shooting. I'm quite disappointed with the result as there was a fair amount of noise and the clarity and crispness wasn't what I expected. The set up I had was two off camera lights to the left and right of the model, and a speedlight on the camera bouncing off the white ceiling. I had to crank up the speedlight to be +3 EV to get anything like the shutter speed I was expecting. Without cranking things up it needed a 1 sec + exposure even with the flash triggered, which really confused me. I really need to do some more reading up on this kind of stuff. The camera was probably about 2 metres away from the model. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong as far as clarity/crispness, etc for the image? The camera was tripod mounted and nice and steady, I used a shutter release cable, so I really don't know how to account for the amount of noise in the shot. I originally had this on ISO 100, but that made the exposure times even longer (4+ secs).

Description: Another snake from (Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter's) Australia Zoo reptile exhibit. This green treesnake was tightly wound around its branch and made a great subject. I used a CPL filter to remove glass reflections from its display case and braced the lens hood up against the glass to reduce and camera shake. I post processed it in photoshop to reduce noise, colour correct, crop, sharpen and burn some of the shadows.

Description: You have to watch where you step bushwalking in Australia, otherwise you might get a nasty surprise like this critter. Not sure what sort of a snake this is, but knowing Australian fauna, it'd probably kill you and eat you before you worked out what you'd stood on. The Old Windmill

Description: [Taken from wikipedia] The Old Windmill is the oldest surviving building in Queensland. Built in 1824 by convicts for grinding grain it originally had wind-powered sails and from 1828 this was done by treadmill. After the murder of two members of a surveying party in May 1840, three Aboriginal men were tried for the crimes. In July 1841, the two surviving Aborigines were hanged from a beam from an upper window of the windmill. In 1862, the Old Windmill became the first home of the Queensland Museum. It was later used as a signal tower, and is now used as a weather observatory. This is a three shot +/- 3 EV HDR image, with the shots taken hand-held lying of the grass, in amongst the ants and other biting creepy crawlies. I did some levels and colour correction, curves and sharpening in P/S.

Description: Baby Bird's recent birthday prompted me to drag out a shot of my youngest's "stove cake" complete with pots and pans. My wife loves doing themed birthday cakes for the kids. Anyway, this was pretty much a snapshot type of pic to try to get my daughter's expression when she saw it. I've not done many people shots, so any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, the lighting was natural, without flash.

1941 Chevrolet

Description: This HDR was taken in a rather crowded car show. I tried a different approach to how I'd normally take these, by increasing the F-Number as far as possible to increase the exposure time, so that most people milling about would be ghosted. Taking this over the 3 HDR exposures, +/- 2 EV, and letting the HDR software remove as many of the ghosts as possible, then the remaining few can be cleaned up in Photoshop relatively easily. Edit: LOL. Looking at the EXIF, I think I picked the one photo from the day where I DIDN'T use this new approach. :-/

Description: The radiator grill on this vintage 1925 Buick Hearse almost looks like it's smiling, accentuated by the close-up wide angle. This is a 3 shot +/- 2 EV HDR, also post-processed a fair bit in Photoshop to straighten it up, exaggerate the wide angle and really reduce the DOF.

Description: Vintage Holden Utility. I just love the anthropomorphic "facial expression" of these older cars. Again, I've been playing around with Photoshop post-processing. Lots of cloning -- especially having to remove me and my camera/tripod out of the many reflective surfaces. I know the crop's a bit too tight -- I would have liked to have given it a bit more room at the front to move into, but there was another car parked right in front of it which is just out of frame. Ideally I would like to have placed the nearest car headlight on the right-hand vertical thirds line, but the original framing meant this wasn't possible. No amount of cloning work would have allowed me to do this without a complete background replacement, and with so many reflections, I think this would look too artificial. Any comments, feedback and/or criticisms are much appreciated, so don't be shy.

Surf at Snapper Rocks

Description: Single image pseudo HDR (more of a medium range I guess.) Single RAW image, saved as 0, + .5 and -.5 EV and then processed as HDR. I'm a bit (read: a lot) annoyed at myself with this, as I really wanted the focus on where the waves were breaking, but the conditions around me (setting sun, crashing waves, reflected light in the viewfinder, etc.) all made it difficult to get a clear view of the focus point. In the end I stuffed it up and didn't get the focus point right. As a point of interest - you can see one of the crazy surfers wearing a black wetsuit, surfing his way out of the frame just in front of the breaking wave on the left-hand-side. It's a little dark, but you should be able to see him to get some size perspective.

Description: Probably about 20 minutes earlier than I should have taken this shot, but I had to leave. This is a 3 shot HDR +/- 2 EV. I really wanted to hang around to get a few more shots as the sun sank below the horizon, but family matters pressed and I had to go. Photo is at Snapper Rocks near Coolangatta on the Queensland/ New South Wales border in Aus. Those little black dots in the surf are crazy surfers, out in the breakers.

Description: Took this photo when we went out for a picnic today. It was a nice spot with some swimming holes further upstream. I was the only one out of my wife and two kids that didn't end up slipping and sitting the creek. :) THe shot is a 3 image +/- 2 EV HDR tonemapped and colour/levels corrected in photoshop. Any comments appreciated as I haven't done a lot of nature/landscape stuff.

Description: Low rider Rat Rod. This was a mean looking cruiser. It doesn't look like it from the pic, but the front bumper was about an inch above the ground. Very reminiscent of Stephen King's Christine and more than a little creepy. I know there's some haloing along one side and the sky, but in this case I think it adds to the vibe. I did reduce it in my first post-processing attempt, but it actually looks better with it in.
