Stove Cake

Description: Baby Bird's recent birthday prompted me to drag out a shot of my youngest's "stove cake" complete with pots and pans. My wife loves doing themed birthday cakes for the kids. Anyway, this was pretty much a snapshot type of pic to try to get my daughter's expression when she saw it. I've not done many people shots, so any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, the lighting was natural, without flash.

1941 Chevrolet

Description: This HDR was taken in a rather crowded car show. I tried a different approach to how I'd normally take these, by increasing the F-Number as far as possible to increase the exposure time, so that most people milling about would be ghosted. Taking this over the 3 HDR exposures, +/- 2 EV, and letting the HDR software remove as many of the ghosts as possible, then the remaining few can be cleaned up in Photoshop relatively easily. Edit: LOL. Looking at the EXIF, I think I picked the one photo from the day where I DIDN'T use this new approach. :-/

Description: The radiator grill on this vintage 1925 Buick Hearse almost looks like it's smiling, accentuated by the close-up wide angle. This is a 3 shot +/- 2 EV HDR, also post-processed a fair bit in Photoshop to straighten it up, exaggerate the wide angle and really reduce the DOF.

Description: Vintage Holden Utility. I just love the anthropomorphic "facial expression" of these older cars. Again, I've been playing around with Photoshop post-processing. Lots of cloning -- especially having to remove me and my camera/tripod out of the many reflective surfaces. I know the crop's a bit too tight -- I would have liked to have given it a bit more room at the front to move into, but there was another car parked right in front of it which is just out of frame. Ideally I would like to have placed the nearest car headlight on the right-hand vertical thirds line, but the original framing meant this wasn't possible. No amount of cloning work would have allowed me to do this without a complete background replacement, and with so many reflections, I think this would look too artificial. Any comments, feedback and/or criticisms are much appreciated, so don't be shy.

Description: Just mucking about and experimenting with adjustment layers/gradients/gaussian blur, masking, cloning and the unsharp mask in Photoshop. ... So this image should be Kev's worst nightmare, as I've tweaked and played around with just about everything. And the source image was HDR'ed too. :-/

Surf at Snapper Rocks

Description: Single image pseudo HDR (more of a medium range I guess.) Single RAW image, saved as 0, + .5 and -.5 EV and then processed as HDR. I'm a bit (read: a lot) annoyed at myself with this, as I really wanted the focus on where the waves were breaking, but the conditions around me (setting sun, crashing waves, reflected light in the viewfinder, etc.) all made it difficult to get a clear view of the focus point. In the end I stuffed it up and didn't get the focus point right. As a point of interest - you can see one of the crazy surfers wearing a black wetsuit, surfing his way out of the frame just in front of the breaking wave on the left-hand-side. It's a little dark, but you should be able to see him to get some size perspective.

Description: Probably about 20 minutes earlier than I should have taken this shot, but I had to leave. This is a 3 shot HDR +/- 2 EV. I really wanted to hang around to get a few more shots as the sun sank below the horizon, but family matters pressed and I had to go. Photo is at Snapper Rocks near Coolangatta on the Queensland/ New South Wales border in Aus. Those little black dots in the surf are crazy surfers, out in the breakers.

Description: Took this photo when we went out for a picnic today. It was a nice spot with some swimming holes further upstream. I was the only one out of my wife and two kids that didn't end up slipping and sitting the creek. :) THe shot is a 3 image +/- 2 EV HDR tonemapped and colour/levels corrected in photoshop. Any comments appreciated as I haven't done a lot of nature/landscape stuff.

Description: Low rider Rat Rod. This was a mean looking cruiser. It doesn't look like it from the pic, but the front bumper was about an inch above the ground. Very reminiscent of Stephen King's Christine and more than a little creepy. I know there's some haloing along one side and the sky, but in this case I think it adds to the vibe. I did reduce it in my first post-processing attempt, but it actually looks better with it in.

Description: This is the old Holden I first saw (and uploaded a photo of) on Australia Day last month. I like the colours in this, but there was a bit too much green all over, so I dialed it back a bit on the grass, but left the cars. I really should invest in a polarising filter.

Description: HDR image of a cracking looking jet black and shiny Eliminator-style Hot Rod. Very sunny, hence the lens flare, but I think it woks well. Unfortunately, cranking the HDR down to lose the halos lost some of the flare, so I kept 'em in, warts an' all.

Description: This is an updated version of my Hotrod pic. I'm playing with borders and cloning. The right hand edge details are all cloned as I wanted to remove the tightness of the original crop. Is it obviously cloned or would it pass inspection? Comments and feedback much appreciated. Also, does anyone have any advice on border/framing? Are there any rules of thumb or is it a case of anything goes?

Description: An interesting statue at a set of traffic lights in the Brisbane CBD. Not sure what it represents, but it looks pretty cool. I'm starting to experiment with night shots, so any comments would be appreciated. Unfortunately there's a bit of camera shake which reduced the metallic sharpness of the statue. Description: Moving away from monster trucks and V8s, here's their grandaddy -- a steam-powered traction engine. I used a smidgen of HDR on the image. Can you tell? ;) The image is way too grainy at the larger size for my liking, but I like the overall effect at the smaller size.

Take 2 - Brisbane River at Night

Description: This is my second go at a night shot of the Brisbane River. I like this one better than my previous attempt and I've put into practise some of the stuff that's be mentioned here recently. Any other advice on this one? I used my little tripod balanced on a wall with a 2 second timer and ISO 100 to reduce noise.

Description: Hard to believe, but this is the engine of an Australian Army Landrover Discovery. The vehicle is called "Armygeddon." The bodywork was as highly polished as the chrome -- I had to ask the soldier with the polishing rag if I could lean up against it to get the shot. Thankfully he was proud to show it off.

Description: Opinions please. I'd love to know which image you think makes a better pic -- this version of the Army APC or my original, more surreal one? I know a lot of purists like minimal retouching, but both of these have been retouched in different ways. I also realise some people won't like either too, and that's okay too. (Unless you're Kev, who apparently likes anything with horsepower that looks like a surreal cartoon.) ;-)

Description: Nice looking Army APC. I just wish the girl being chatted up by the soldiers would have gone out of shot. I waited for ages, but she wasn't gonna move. (... and yes, I know about the edge glow Geoff. I did stumble across a Photomatix post last night that gave some good advice about how to minimise the glow tweaking some settings, so I'm going to give it another shot when I've got some more time to play)

Description: HDR shot of a racing car (not sure what formula). The car was tiny but very loud. Unfortunately I couldn't get a shot without people milling about, so I ended up with a few malformed ghosts. I tried photoshopping some out, but it all got too much in the end. Again, I know a lot of people won't like the artificial look of this shot, but it's one of my favourites from the (lots) I took at Indy.
