I softened this candid shot a bit for the look I wanted. Captured at a friend's wedding, hand-held, no flashgun.

I like this one Yvonne, but there needs to be some sharpness in it Wink A fellow photographer gave me some good advice that's helped a LOT. Set your focus to "spot," then point your focus at the eye closest to you. If they're on the same plane both eyes should be in sharp focus. Keep it up!

Thanks Kbirdd, I'll try that next time. I'm new at portrait capture and this was probably taken too quickly, hand-held and no external flash, however, I'm going to practice at other weddings I have coming up as the expressions and feelings of joy on guests faces are just wonderful! Love all your pics of babybird, she is a wee smasher!:)

Yvonne I was sure the un edited versions eyes were sharp or am I mistaken, If they were then you could have kept them that way if you had used a layer mask in photoshop and used the smart sharpen tool, It works by adding a layer then you use a brush tool and rub over the eyes in this case, leaving the face with just the right amount of blur that you want to enhance a portrait face shot.

Dado, this photo was always a bit soft, no sharpness in the eyes. However, I'm going to try the technique you just explained to me as I guess thats how the smooth look you see in fashion mags is achieved i.e. creamy, soft skin showing little or no lines whilst retaining the sharpness of the eyes and possibly lips. I'll try it and let you know how I get on. Cheers Thumbs Up!

Yvonne, as dado explained, u can do also just select the eyes in PS and apply sharpen tool. That is what I did with my shot of Kirsty as her eyes were a tad soft. Give it a bash and lets have a look, because this is such a little beauty of an expression.
