I happened to pass by the beach where this veteran & vintage car rally was taking place so I thought I'd try a new subject for me - not taken it as far as Honez with HDR but time to learn that process yet.

Hi Yvonne,

I like the composition on your three pics here. However, the shots as is are rather dull...simply because they require a mid-range dynamic boost. This is easliy done by adjusting the D-Lighting in NX2, or the highlights/shadow recovery option in PS/Elements.

You need to experiment more in this dept. The correct amount of D-lighting really makes a picture pop., and brings it alive.

I find that with digital pics...that this aspect is a common result. Even with a correct exposure...the mid-tone range is lacking without a pp boost of some kind.

In fact, I'd guess that in reality - digital processing of RAW actually 'requires' it as a constant process. DSLR sensors just don't appear to be able to capture the full-dynamic range by themselves.

The grey skies are a bit drab, but they do actually 'blend in' with the car quite nicely...altho, a contrasting deep blue would have been better - IMHO.

Thanks Kev, I had experimented with the sky colour and have the same picture with the sky graduated in a deep orange/red - it looks good, quite poster-like and this tends to make the car pop more. I take on board your comments about mid-range dynamic boost - need time to experiment more.

Yvonne - it's just a simple step really.

Convert your original NEF file to a TIFF, then load it in PS Elements (if you don't have NX2 yet)...then simply go to enhancet - Adjust lighting - shadows/highlights.

Set the lighten shadows slider to approx 25
The darken highlights to say 5
and mid-tone contrast to say 3

This will immediately improve the mid-range tonal quality of the pic and eliminate that kinda dull characteristic.

Use that as a starting point and then go from there.

IF you do have NX2 - simply load the NEF and use the adjust D-Lighting function (better quality option) to do exactly the same thing.

It takes just a few seconds.
