You can tell our local soccer club doesn't draw the crowds like the European National teams. For this shot, the lens was wide open... I know the DOF is pretty shallow, but I was about 150 feet away from the nearest player, so I was surprised that the others behind him went soft. The black "dirt" kicking up near his feet is part of the artificial turf. It's not really dirt, they are little rubber beads that lie beneath the "grass" to cushion the surface.

There's so much movement--and just plain energy--coming off the player in the center, that I don't really think a soft background really matters much. I actually like the overall effect. You nailed the action on this shot!

Thanks, jackfepic. I enjoy the action photography, but you have to take a lot of shots to find one worth sharing. Thank goodness a "roll" of digital film is inexpensive.
