To be honest, the landscapes around here are lovely, but they're not the breathtaking scenery that one might think.... or want. I personally love railroads for a landscape, as I think that they are way too underrated in photography. So I was up at 6:20 this morning and at the railroad with Dad by 7:00. It was cold too!!! LOL! 39 degrees to be exact. The sun had just come up, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky. It was just kind of blueish-gray. So I did the best I could. I still like the result though. I think it's got atmosphere...I hope And a self portrait as well.
As a huge side point, this (with another recent photo of mine) has inspired me to start a project. "Heartland of America." The way I see it, America has a rich past and the heartland embodies a lot of that very essence. Without the farmers, tractors, silos, barns, and southern cooking, America wouldn't be the same. And I live smack-dab in the middle of it all. What better theme to photograph?

True, Rich. I do. I really need to fix that. It's just that it's so much easier to make a photo look sad (and get away with it) than it is to make it happy and carefree (and get away with it) Must work on that....

Nice composition beth, IMO all i would have done was clone out the track side marker behind you which then keeps the focus on you.

I really like how the trees have a really vintage feel to them yet the railroad doesnt, It almost makes it feel like there is an ancient forest that we have intruded upon. love it!

I like this Beth, but I think the in focus 426 spoils it for me. I can't see any relevance of the numerics in what the photo represents.
Not sure if it'd work, but I'd have probably tried this with the model (you) on the first (lowest) third-line, with the focus on the topmost third-line and a nice shallow DoF. Subject contemplating on the horizon sort of thing.
Either that or gone for a long DoF and have both the third lines in focus. But I'd have you sitting on the rail at the bottom third line though, for sure.
