i think would be even nicer if there wa less light on th background to make the lantern pop out much more

I think you could do a lot more with this Beth in elements.The composition is there just that it needs something else .

I think darkening the background will help, Rich. Any more suggestions?

Yep. Mask the subject, increase the contrast in front layer, sharpen maybe and some gaussian blur on the background. Colour correct (did you use sepia?). Needs some levels and curves adjustments IMHO, and straighten to the bottom of the lantern.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
