Description: I'm still developing some of the shots from the bike race last summer. This was as the riders were coming around a 90 degree turn after a long straight away. You could smell all the brakes burning as the riders came by. Given my druthers, I wish the focus was more in the foreground on this one.

Description: Sadie was lying on the floor, with the afternoon sun coming in from the window behind her (that's the slight backlight around her ear at the top). The sun was then reflected off the fireplace doors and cast some light on her snout and eye. I couldn't have planned this if I tried. BTW, she is simply the best dog in the world.

Description: Updated with a few edits based on comments below. 12/14/11 This was taken almost a year ago and I keep going back trying to post process it to clean it up. I think I hit the point of diminishing returns so if I upload it now, it won't take up more unnecessary hours that yield little results. :) (I suppose this photo was more of an exercise in what I could do in post, since the original shot was not that great technically.)

Forward Attack

Description: You can tell our local soccer club doesn't draw the crowds like the European National teams. For this shot, the lens was wide open... I know the DOF is pretty shallow, but I was about 150 feet away from the nearest player, so I was surprised that the others behind him went soft. The black "dirt" kicking up near his feet is part of the artificial turf. It's not really dirt, they are little rubber beads that lie beneath the "grass" to cushion the surface.

Infra Red Simulation

Description: I had been reading about infra-red film and filters, and learning about the characteristics of those types of images. So I tried to take a regular daylight image and simulate an IR effect using the color channel mixer, grain and blur, and just some selective lighting. It's not a completely accurate simulation but it was a fun little experiment.

Description: This was taken as the rider was coming around a turn in the race. The shot by itself was not that impressive, except for the spoke pattern on the front wheel that I found interesting, so I used it as an opportunity to crop in close and do some more effects experimentation.

Description: This is pretty soft because I was at the wrong end of the field (pitch for you European football fans), and my lens was pushed to the limit. (It's a 55-250mm, but I notice the quality really suffers past the 200 mark.) Nevertheless, I was pleased with the outcome after cropping and sharpening. Besides, I'm going to be on vacation for a week and my weekend goal (get it?) was to get something uploaded before I left.

Description: I wouldn't normally post this... I think the lens was dirty or I just totally blew the focus. But I had to show Rich he's not alone in cutting the bottom of the frame too tight. :) I wish I could take it again, I liked the way the shot was set up.

Description: This is the roof line detail of Oakborne Mansion. Spent quite a bit of time cloning out a cable (and its shadow) that was sloppily draped over the side. The architecture is pretty cool, the building really has some character.

Description: I think I need to come back to this when I have some direct sunlight. I was a little disappointed that the background wasn't sharper. Could be due to the longer exposure time and the wind blowing the leaves, or maybe it was just that hazy. The sky here has looked like this for three weekends in a row. :(

Dark and Mysterious

Description: Per Beth's request, the Dark and Mysterious version via Gimp. Desaturated, then played with the levels and color curves, added a (very) small tint of blue, then added some grain noise, and burned the background somewhat. I tried to add a fog effect but it looked like a bad 1950's movie. :)

Description: Again, it was getting pretty dark, and I was without a tripod, so I opted to let the background go blurry on this one. A little unusual for a landscape, I suppose, but it works for me. I think the lesson I learned on this excursion is that if you can't get the wide DOF with the light available, then work with the DOF that you do have.
