Blackbird with Olive

Description: I shot this little guy a while ago on our local golf course. He was buzzing around stealing olives for quite some time before he came close enough. The main reason for uploading this shot was to test whether the EXIF data is now working again. Sorry it's taken a while to fix it, it suddenly dawned on me that it stopped working at the time we moved servers. The reason was that the new server did not have a little bit of software needed to read the EXIF called jhead. I have now installed it and things are working again. Unfortunately it was the storage of the data that wasn't working rather than the display. So there is no EXIF stored for the photos uploaded in the last few months. But the good news is that it will be stored and displayed on all new photos uploaded from now on. (He said hopefully)

Trees after the fire

Description: In September last year we had quite a big fire that swept through the trees around where we live. The fire travelled so fast that only the leaves were burnt and the trees blackened. Within a few weeks the trees were growing new leaves and I reckon they will be back to normal within a year or so. I really just uploaded this to show Beth what she might do by increasing the contrast of her lovely dock picture. This picture originally did not have very strong color so I pushed up the saturation and adjusted the contrast quite a bit. One problem I had was colored halos down the sides of some of the branches which became very saturated so I had to use several applications of 'replace color' to desaturate and darken these.

Description: Not really a stunning shot but I thought it might be interesting. You don't get much time to mess about when these shots come up, just grab the camera and see what you can do before it goes away. There seems to be a hell of a lot of noise in the sky for 400 ISO, but I think it's because the shot was a bit under exposed.

Description: I thought you might enjoy this one, I think it's quite fun. The kids at school are putting on a production of the Rocky Monster show, it's basically a kid's version of the Rocky Horror show. This was one of the shots I took during the poster shoot. It wasn't the one we used because it has no principal characters in it, but I thought it was the best shot as I like the way the smoke came out. Basically the setup was two studio flash heads, one at the front with a brolly and one behind the smoke machine shining back towards the camera. I had to be careful to keep the girls on front of the light otherwise it would have been way too strong. The background is part of the painted set.

Description: To blur or not to blur. I think this one works better as a semi blurred picture because it conveys a sense of movement which helps to illustrate the total mayhem that was going on at the time. I like the contrast between the urgency of the birds who are being fed by someone off screen and the relaxed people who have had enough to eat.

Bird of Prey

Description: Went to a bird display this afternoon and shot this. I'm pretty pleased with it. I love shooting birds, they are very graceful in flight and they are not easy to capture. I had all sorts of trouble with getting the exposure right, I tried using auto with exposure compensation but the difference between the exposure for the sky and the exposure for the bird was too great. What I did in the end was to take a few shots on the ground and, when I had the exposure I wanted, set the camera to manual. Luckily the light wasn't changing much so I left the exposure at the same setting for the rest of the afternoon. The sky was overcast but bright, I have not made any tonal adjustment to the sky, this is more or less how it came out of the camera. The only work I did was to repair some broken tail feathers.

Ants on a Boiled Sweet

Description: I know this is blurred and grainy and the depth of field is very shallow, but I hope you'll forgive me when I tell you that these are the normal, tiny, ants that you get in these parts and in Britain. They are not the big type you get in the garden and the jungle. Each ant is about 2mm long. And the shots were hand held as well. The background in a boiled sweet.

Description: Not one of my greatest shots nor one of his greatest tennis strokes but I am posting it to try to show how much action can be frozen at what shutter speed. This one was taken at 1/400 sec and you can see that, although most of it is sharp, the arm, ball and racquet are blurred. In the other picture of the long jumper 1/4000 sec has frozen him completely in mid air. So I think we can say that freezing sports action requires at least 1/1000 sec, even then the ball in this picture, which is the thing moving at the fastest speed, would not be frozen. Incidentally we can tell that this shot is just after he has hit the ball, if the ball was approaching the racquet it would be travelling much slower.

Long Jump

Description: An example of using a shallow depth of field to throw the background out of focus. As a bonus the fast shutter speed renders the subject sharp even though he is moving quite fast. Long jump is one event where the path of the athlete is fairly predictable so I set the focus to manual, focused on the end of the sandpit, and waited for the guys to jump into my zone of focus. Timing of course is critical but you get better at it with practice.

Description: Stiill not quite 'macro' but quite close. That is a, not very big, finger tip he's sitting on. As you can see even at such a small aperture I couldn't get him all in focus. He's called 'Houdini' for obvious reasons.

Description: These were taken last week on my ski trip to Sierra Nevada, Spain. A little know ski resort in southern Spain just outside Granada. The height at the top where these were taken is just over 3,000 metres (10,000 feet). There is a road that goes to the top of the mountain, only open in the summer obviously, which is the highest stretch of road in Europe. Although we have higher mountains in the Alps none of them have roads to the top.

Description: Just for Kev. It's the view from my balcony, not really a landscape but at least it's outdoors. This is a stitch job from about ten frames taken handheld and stitched the hard way in Photoshop. I have a 1mtr x 30cms version hanging in my lounge, or at least it will be when I can be bothered to get the drill out.

Description: I've been working on shots of coffee cups for a few days now, I'm quite pleased with this one. It took a long time to shoot because I had to wash up the cup between each shot and usually the saucer as well if I spilt any. These kind of 'time sensitive' shots are a lot of fun to do, they're not easy but not that hard either. It's just a question of doing it over and over again until you get it right.
