I would have prefered to see a landscape ratio here.
Yes, you were still a bit late...probably 15-20 mins before actual sunrise would have produced the nicest colours/effect...and less problems with the direct SUN factor.

Thanks Kev - appreciate that. I'll sort things out better for sunrise/sunset next time round. I'm fiddling around with shutter/iso etc , also - back to the manual!

As Kev said, the sun is too bright for my liking.

You can also note the 2/3 rule (again pointed out by Kev).

And personally, I prefer "Landscape" for such pictures rather than "portrait" unless there is some other tall subject that renders portrait more appropriate.

Brilliant colour. I disagree about the landscape format, I think you can have upright landscapes and often they look more exciting. I do agree that you have cut the picture in half which is not normally a good thing.

Have you tried darkening the picture down? After all the rocks are almost black already, the only thing is if the sun is too burned out, it may just accentuate the white. I prefer this nice bright picture to the other grey ones.

Landscapes are not easy.

Thanks Geoff, I did shoot this in portrait so no cropping involved. I have been back and shot some more sunrise/sunset pics but colours not as fantastic as first day which is disappointing as did manage to arrive well before sunrise/sunset times. However, its all good practice and I will persevere! What I did discover is that I need to get a more heavy duty tripod as my existing one is not strong enough to hold 70-300 macro lens I recently bought and shots were out of focus and useless. Changed lens last night to original 18-55 and shots were much sharper and dop appeared better - encouraging. I'll take your tip and try and darken picture down a bit as colours are true and I didn't photoshop any of pics.
