Yvonne - Foxgloves are quite large and deep flowers. You really need to use a smaller aperture on a flower like this. Take a look at the foxglove pic in my gallery...I used an f/22 on that shot. Your photo above is just too soft...plus you seem to have centred the focus upon the stem area...rather than the flowers.

Yes, I agree, now that you point it out. I took this in the summer before you advised f/22 for these kind of shots. Thanks again.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting that one should only use f/22 on a deep flower shot. Ultimately, it all depends upon the type of effect one want to capture. However, in order to get a decent DOF right across a plant like this...at least an f/11 would be required. Don't forget - also the distance one is "from" the plant will influence the background-bokeh obtained and subject-matter critical sharpness.

Thanks Kev, but I did want sharper focus (I always do!)- you can just about see the fine hairs on the foxglove petals, which I didn't realise they had but I would like them to be even more apparent. I'm not great on distance - tend to get up close and personal but will study the science bit a bit more and hopefully it will all fall into place! Cheers! Thumbs Up!
