Beautiful colours but it's got to be sharp. If you can't get the tripod out and do the whole setup thing. Then just back off a bit to get a better depth of field and crop the picture later. OK you won't have used all your pixels but at least you will have a sharp picture.

Yes, these Buddleia are quite difficult to capture well - even with the right equipment.


I'm not 100% sure why, but certain flowers, especially those with numerous, closely packed and many faceted small blooms (like this) are far more of a challenge to get the exposure correct. It's probably because the digital sensor isn't quite up to the job of accurately registering so many different angles of reflection in such a small area.


Anyhow, as Geoff said - a tripod is an absolute must for this kind of shot. Also a large DOF (ie: f/22 or higher)...and most definitely taken on a bright "cloudy day" with no direct sunlight...in order to minimize that unwanted harsh reflective aspect.


IF you still desire a blurred background bokeh - then situate yourself so that the backgound is at least 20-30 feet behind the flower - that way, even using an f/22 the background will still be relatively blurred.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
