my neice at competition. I was a long way away from her and had to use digital zoom but after some tips from this website I was able to get a much better pic than previous competitions.

Given the conditions you were shooting under, I think you have done quite well really. You might be better off setting the white balance to auto or indoor lighting, the colour looks very yellow here. The graininess can't really be helped, it is caused by a combination of the high ISO setting, which you needed in order to get a picture at all, and the digital zoom. Do try to get her feet in next time though.


Generally I would advise you not to use the digital zoom at all, ever. Crop your picture on the computer. There is no benefit to using the digital zoom and you can crop the picture more precisely at your leisure, if you do it afterwards.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
