These are my first attempts at this style of shot. I really didn't have much of an idea how to do it, just did what I thought made sense. Smallest apature possible, lowest ISO, long exposure. What should I have done to make it spectacular instead of so-so?

I think these are very good for your first attempt at this kind of shot. I prefer this landscape as oppposed to your close up simply because it shows more of the water spilling over the rocks like silky waves dripping from each orifice. Also the depth is good on this and the eye is drawn to the rear of the picture as well as taking in everything at the front. Perhaps the rocks could have been a bit darker and it would be good if they looked wet and shiny. A polariser would also allow you to see what lies beneath the water and give a deeper colour to everything. Good shot, I like it! Smile Try cropping the tree out in the foreground - see if that focuses the eye mostly on the rocks.

I like this, pretty damn good for a first time out. Next time you have a go at this...wait until it's raining a light-ish drizzle, so everything is wet. That will give a bit more interesting, rain-forest type feel, plus also make the rocks have that slippery vibe,...and cool water droplets on the leaves, etc.
