This shot has a good feel too. Old boats n water always create a subtle mood - I think. As you use a Nikon D300 and NEF (like me) I would use the 'selective' U-Point lighting in NX2 to carefully brighten selective regions in the frame. Ie: on the boat hull region for example. It's amazing just how a simple boost can bring out the mid-range dynamics.

I like this very much too, the subject matter is great and the angle gives good depth. I think you have already had a go at darkening the sky. It looks as though you have masked the sky with a rectangle then softened the edges using the feather command. Unfortunately this has softened the edges at the top and sides as well and given the picture a sort of light border.

A better way to mask this would be to use the 'quick mask' with the graduated tool. Run the mask all the way down to cover the water behind the boat, graduating from about an inch above the horizon down to the bottom. This will give you a nice gradual blend. Then by hand delete the mask where the boat is. Then you need to invert the mask so the sky is uncovered and the rest of the picture is masked and apply some darkening to the sky. This is best done using curves.

Of course this all assumes that you are using Photoshop, I don't know, you might be one of Kev's NX2 fans.

Unfortunately I haven't done one on the graduation tool yet but I'm sure you can work it out.

I know that Geoff pooh poohs NX2 coz he thinks it's a rinky-dink toy program. That's only because he's been brainwashed by the Photoshop juggernaut conglomerate Wink

NX2 is actually a very niffty editor prog, and definitely the best NEF raw converter out there at the moment. The ease by which one can apply 'selective' adjustments is a lot easier (and quicker) than Photoshop's more traditional layer/masking process.

No tricky hand tracing or using a paint-brush to mask intricate regions, etc.

I like the angle of this photo and also the reflection of the boat in the water. Great job!
