Direct flash with no DOF makes this a very harsh and undesirable pics. But with practice, I am sure we will see good pics from you soon.

Harsh, sure. Undesirable, I'll quibble with that one. I wanted detail, and I got it. Yes, it would be better w/o the flash, but I needed a tripod and didn't have one, so I had to go for a flash shot. It succeeds on one level, detail, and fails on another, lighting. But I can't say that I don't like it. I do appreciate the constructive criticism, though.

When I find myself in a situation like you describe (require a tripod, but don't have one), rather than reaching for the flash, I find a way to steady my lens (squat down and use my body as a tripod, etc). It requires a VERY steady hand (I've had to switch to decaf for these shots... heh heh heh), but it can be done with some hard work.

Myself, I find that using flash this close to a macro subject just tends to create too many unfortunate side-effects (unwanted shadows, iffy contrast, etc).

One thing that may help... if your camera came with some photo editing software, you may want to mess with the contrast and brightness, a bit. You may be able to even out the photo to something that offers the detail you want and help a little bit with the lighting.

Good luck and keep on shooting!
