Tried the black canopy over this one to try and darken the plexiglass a bit more

Yeah, this images is a lot better (and cleaner) than the other upload. The trick is to cast enuff dark reflection onto the plexiglass to create the jet-black result. I normally place a black card behind and above the plexi-sheet.
Then getting the just the right shooting angle is important too...to create the best reflection strength/balance.
Personally, I think that I might ditch the plexiglass approach as it's such a rigmerole to clean it properly, etc. I suspect, that a nice thin piece of regular glass...placed on top of a dark black card (or whatever colour one wants to use) will produce very similar results...without all the hassle. I shall experiment with that.

Thanks richingr. Kev the problem i have in that using a light tent i dont have any lighting that i can use on each side of the tent to be able to throw enough light underneath the object, the shot above used mirror card on each side to try and bounce light underneath the object but hasnt given enough, i did use as suggested a black card above the object and angled till the background through the viewfinder became more black.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
