Hi Rich, I have this special machine that blows hot air upwards and levitates objects in a perfect floating postion for shooting images. It's called a "BS Maximizer Luft Makina"
NOT!!!!
Nah, seriously, I simply shot the product against a white background (to obtain the best colour-seperation) then created an extraction mask, added a black background layer, and also a diagonal metalic gradient layer in Photoshop. So three layers in total.

I used the "pen tool" to mask this subject (which is great for well-defined objects)...it took no more than 5 mins to do.

Well, there are several different terms connected to the process of masking, or layer masking. Extraction, cut-outs, isolation, etc. Plus there are layer and vector masks too.
Many images that you see today are actually a composite of several different layers (that work together...rather like a collage) to produce the final result.
Each layer contains a different part of the image, and layers are 'stacked' on top of one another in a 'transparent' type format.
Google it and you will find lots of info and tutorials on the subject. Once you can actually visualize the process...then you will understand how it works.
