The light is very harsh here. A softer light source would have better effect. Would also recommend a closer aperture setting to have a sharper picture

Yes, the onboard flash is not very good for shots like this.

The on board flash would be fine and ideal in most cases for flower shots so long as you defuse the lighting.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
