What you need to do is study your shot and see why it works, all the lines work well in this shot you have straight lines angled lines and rectangular line mixed with good colours . Nice shot

Until now I have been shooting on visual instinct. You are very right, I am now looking back at the stuff that has worked in the past year of shooting and seeing WHY things worked and trying to learn what to do and more importantly what didn't work and why. I am really enjoying putting more thought into making shots work as opposed to hoping that they work. Thank you for your input. Very appreciated!

The reason this shot works...is because you have included several different realms of interest. There is a variety of diagonal lines that draw the eye. There is image depth, and subject foreground, middle ground and background. Plus, the lighting adds a reasonable amount of shadow intrigue too.
The composition is good.
However, a polarizer would have produced a better overall balance tho...and also controlled the tendency to blowout in places.

Thank you Kev! I have been using a polarizer lately to help with that problem. It seems to work really well. I am still in the clouds about a lot of exposure issues, but am working on those Smile My big thing I can't seem to figure out is the digital (chunking or distortion) in my skies. The one I did of the five span bridge had a bunch of chunky distortion in the sky that I used a blur tool on to smooth over but I am looking to find out why I get it in the first place. Any help would be really helpful.
