This picture's nothing special- more of a discussion photo...I have a problem....so I decided to stop searching google and racking my brain and yes...ask some of you gurus who would know. It hasn't taken long for me to figure out that the 18-55mm lens is a great little lens, but I need something longer for zooming in more. (duh)
Okay, so I've seen a few options. I have a job, yes, but it's nothing huge! And I can't spend all my money on camera supplies (much as I'd love to). There's insurance (student driver here!!!!) fees, and other such things. So I need an all purpose general type lens. I like both the 75-300 and the 55-250mm lens. I like the fact that they're both relatively inexpensive, yet have some nice reviews and specs. I want to shoot landscapes, then get a bird 15-20 feet away, then turn and get Jacob running behind me. You guys know me by now, I'm not a specialist in anything in particular. I try everything - literally. I need time to develop in different genres of photography. I'm not a flower expert like Kev here...or anything like that. I just need a decent lens for learning and having fun with photography. I think the 55-250 is a nice one - 75mm is zoomed in quite a bit for the wide open end - and I don't shoot a lot of wildlife. So what are your opinions? Have any of you used the 55-250 lens? Know anything about it?

Beth, here's an excellent German site that preview lenses.
http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/overview
Personally, I'm not a big fan of zoom lenses that cover a large focal distance...simply because it always means a compromise of IQ quality - overall.
I prefer to use primes myself.
However, it sounds like you need something like a 70-200mm or 70-300mm zoom to use as a walkabout lens for your street pics and the odd bird/animal shot, etc.
For landscapes tho...one really needs something like a 24-70mm, or even 16-35mm....to have a decent wide-end for vista shots.
Note - Sigma make some really good 3rd part lenses and have a wide selection of zooms, etc.
Your thinking of the 55-250mm would probably cover "most" of your needs.......except at the wide end for vista landscapes.

Hi Beth i would seriously think about the sigma range i have three sigma lenses
and if you compose your shot well they will be just as good as a good canon lens . I did a photo swim shoot recently and used a 24-70 sigma lens and a 70-200 lens this cover the full range i needed . Remember that the reason a lot of us use zoom lenses is laziness. if we get in closer to the action we would not need a long zoom. Im with Kev the 24-70 is great for your camera and would cover a good range of your shots. Take care .

Okay, Rich, thanks! I'll look into it. Yep, I know...thinking about a prime lens as well. As one photographer said, I'm getting gear acquisition syndrome. Ha!

Another Lens to consider is the new Tamron 18-270mm f3.5 Di II VC IF Macro.
http://www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/prod/18270_vcpzd.asp
This lens pretty much covers ALL the focal range that YOU will need...plus it's a proper macro lens too. It'a wide enuff at 18mm for most landscape vistas....and at 270mm the onther end...it will be good enough for basic widelife shots...and everything in-between.
Tamrom do make some really good 3rd party lenses.
