Hi Beth . There are a few things in this shot that i appluade you for .The angle taken on the hat is good.Using f5 has given enough definition to the hat but good Bokeh below. Did you buy the 50mm f1.8 lens as i see this was taken at 50mm

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
