Now this was taken in overcast conditions, f/8 and using a tripod, personally I think that my camera just cannot handle the colour of this rose, seeing is believing how vivid the red is. Think Kev needs to get over and shoot this one.

It would appear that your camera produces a much sharper image when taken from a distance. Both the rose shots are 'soft' and do not match your other photos. Plus, the colours on this one are not represented well. Alas poor Yorick, each level of technology does indeed have it's limits...and whilst photography (per se) is an subjective art form...we are still also governed in many respects by the tools in hand. I think you will achieve far better results if you upgrade to at least something like the new Nikon D60 DSLR. Like with anything...there's a certain price/quality point...at which 'gear' then produces a noticeably better result. As it seems, most lower-end digital cameras are relatively pretty decent at capturing the general landscape/scene type of shots - but when it comes to the more specialized/articulate approach - then pro-grade equip is required. Unfortunately (for us) technology can be a pain in the butt...simply because it creates an excess of G.A.S. (gear aquisition syndrome Smile...I've just spent $5,000 on new camera stuff only 5 months ago...and already, I can see that I should have spent almost double that...and gone the full-frame/top of the line route....but sigh!!! - I digress.

I know, I thought this camera would be fine for me but the more I learn and get sucked into this hobby the more I realise it is going to cost me dear! The big question now is do I stay with Canon or splash out with Nikon. The EOS range or D60?

I've always been a Nikon fan myself - and I still think that they make the best gear...however, Canon is certainly getting pretty close...especially in the pro-sumer market. I think Nikon camera bodies offer a higher level of functionality for the ($) buck tho, and their pro grade lenses definitely get better reviews overall - from what I've read lately. However, the best way is to demo gear for yourself and then make your own decision what is best for you.

Derek, I wouldn't spend too much time fretting about the Nikon vs Canon thing. I'd just figure out your next camera $ budget, do some research, and then demo a couple of different models that fill your immediate needs. Being a long-time musician (35 years) I've often fallen into the 'gear' G.A.S. trap whereby one gets obssessed with finding just the right guitar-tone, etc...after a while it simply becomes a nonsensical paradox and in the end just strangles the creative juices. The same thing can also apply to photgraphy equipment. I think if you go demo a Nikon D60 or D200, and then a similar priced Canon - you will quickly determine which brand works best for you, etc. IF you are on a budget, let me suggest you try out the new Nikon D60 package with the new 16-85mm VR lens...it runs at only about $650 USD...and offers a pretty decent array of features...plus, that new lens is getting some good reviews.

Kev, U are right. The more time spent comparing only leads to more confussion and frustration. Funny enough I met a chap yesterday who was walking around with a D40 and had a chance to play with it, must admit was very impressed, so the D60 must be a cracker. Will let u know how I get on. Thanks for the advice.
