We have some interesting semi-tropical plants growing here on southern Vancouver Island. Native to the Meditterranean region and North Africa.

You're getting quite good at this. :-) Why do you like to crop all your pictures square? It's something I try to avoid like the plague, unless I'm doing a CD cover.

Awww Geoffrey, you are such a conformist Nah!

Actually, I'm just establishing the new "Kev'z square rule of flower composition"

Seriously tho, from a visual perspective...I think that many 'close-up' flower shots lend themselves to a square type of composition...in a similar way that headshots are more suited to the portrait ratio. I feel that this approach brings the subject more "upfront" and personal...than when using a traditional 4:3 landscape crop.

A close-up of a plant...is in fact, a flower portrait.

Our visual-cortex operates on a binocular premise...and when there is an equal symetry within the field it produces full stereopsis...thus giving the subject matter maximum 'presence' and optimal 3D sensory position...rather like the way human audio perception works with music. That's why 99% of lead vocals are placed dead-centre within a studio mix, to create that 'projected' forwardness & presence, etc.

As a fellow musician - you know wot I mean...
