Political comment? I think this pic would work better if it was a bit darker, the face and the hat appear a bit washed out.

Do you think my ISO setting was too high? Think it was at 800 as it was a dull day. No manipulation here, but I could work on it in colour and monochrome - see what you think. Thanks again Geoff, really appreciate all your comments.

All you need to do is use the 'curves' adjustment to darken the mid tones a little. It's not because you had your ISO too high, the reason the picture is slightly overexposed is because there are a lot of dark tones in the picture. The camera's meter is trying to integrate the scene to a mid grey (depending on the meter mode it does slightly different things so this is an over simplified explanation), so when you have a lot of dark tones in the scene the picture will be a bit light. Normally this is not a big problem as you can adjust it in Photoshop but, if you know that it is going to happen, you can use the exposure compensation slider in the camera to balance things up.

Yes, I understand fully - I'll remember that the next time I photograph dark skin tones. It's trial and error but its all good! Thanks for that Geoff.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
