I want to learn how to take this type of photo. I love the white over-exposed look. Can someone tell me if it is possible to shoot this with a Canon Rebel XSI and if so how?

Hi Wendy,


I don't know how this shot was actually done...but it obviously includes a lot of artistic enharncement in software, one way or another. Simply over exposing a person's face against a white background won't obtain this particular result. I think that white face makeup was used as a base, and then the eyes, lips, strawberry, were coloured further in software, plus perhaps with some additional artistic type filter too.


Just one other note - IF this isn't actually your own photograph (which I assume not) - I'm not sure if it's a good idea to upload it here to the gallery.

Hello Wendy,
I believe this technique is known as high-key photography. A quick web search for high key should give some good information. Here's an example of an overexposed flash photo I post-processed in photoshop to get a similar kind of effect. The diffuse glow filter and background colour replacement formed the backbone of the photoshop technique if I remember rightly.

I think it's a cross between the two really. The original exposure was a bit high key but not as much as this baby shot. Then the eyes and lips were masked while the rest of the picture was manipulated in photoshop. Could be white makeup I suppose but, if it is, whoever applied it did a very precise job. Much easier to do it in Ps.

The picture in question seems to have an almost 'powdered' texture under the chin area - that's what made me think that perhaps makeup was used.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
