I ventured out into the back yard with my macro lens shortly after a rain shower to see what tiny beasts were about. I think this is a St Andrew's Cross Spider.
This was a tripod shot, using a handheld, off camera flash diffused with a sheet of white A4 paper.

If your monitor is calibrated properly you should see sixteen distinct tones from white to black.
