Took this a couple weeks ago and forgot to upload it. The TN State Naturalist shows the boys a few thing along a trail hike. It was cool!
I ordered my DSLR last night - Canon 550D/T2i with the kit lens. Can't wait for it to arrive...
And now I've got a question for you DSLR users.
The 18/55mm lens has an aperture range of 3.5-5.6.
However, there's a setting in camera that allows you to set the aperture. How do the two mix? I mean zooming in changes the aperture on the lens, or so I've heard. But what if you've got the aperture set in camera already?
This may be something simple, that I'll figure out as soon as I start using the camera...or not. I'm just kind of puzzled as to how it works.

I just got about ten emails because jackfepic was trying to comment on this picture but the comment has not appeared, I don't know why at the moment. I'll find out.
Very nice picture by the way, great tonal range.

Still can't work out why Jack's message did not appear, so I have copied it from the email I got.

Great black and white capture! You're composition is getting better with every picture you take!
There are several ways to set the aperture on the 550/T2i, from setting the camera into Aperture Priority Mode, or even into Full Manual Mode (using the Q button to select the aperture option, then scrolling to your proper f-stop).
Zooming doesn't really change the aperture, per se'. If you're in Full Auto, it may change the aperture AUTOMATICALLY when zooming, in order to compensate for the loss of light. But, zooming itself doesn't adjust the f-stop.
This may sound confusing, but read through the instruction manual and it will explain the settings to you, and how to get to them.

And, if I might, I would like to suggest picking up the Canon Nifty-Fifty. It's a 50mm 1.8, that takes very decent pictures at a very affordable price. And on the T2i (with its crop factor) it is a great portrait and walk-around lens. Plus, with a nice 1.8 aperture, it can let you experiment with DOF and lower light photography.
It may be a cheap "plastic fantastic," but its over-all image quality blows the kit lens out of the water!
Sorry if this all sounds confusing, I'm writing this on the fly.

Sorry, Geoff.
I thought, maybe, it was an issue with my browser. I guess I hit SUBMIT a few more times than I intended. My bad.

Ah..ha! I feel so silly!! lol!
Now I finally understand that on a f/3.5-5.6 lens, that's not the total aperture, but the range of the maximum aperture when zoomed in!!!!! How dumb of me not to figure that out before. It took about 10 google searches, and finally, Yahoo answers to finally get it through my think head. No wonder I was confused. I guess I worded it wrong.
